I’ve been thinking if the internet is so large and if 5 websites are launched every second, then why is it that only some of them get recognition ?
Anyways if you hear someone saying "I can’t come, I am online now!" then he/ she is probably hooked up onto one of these most popular websites listed below. These are among the best websites in the world and the favorite places on the internet for many in their pastime.
Most Popular Websites Where People Spend Most of their Time
1) Google
Can you even think of a day when you surfed the net and yet not use Google to find something. In fact more than 6-8% of people online now are using the Google Search engine at this moment. Currently Google is the no. 1 search engine and its so frequently used, that the term "Google" has become a verb in major dictionaries meaning ‘to find info. using Google’ . Not only in search but other services like Gmail, GMaps, Blogger, Picasa etc are its top products. Recently they launched Chrome which has already become the 2nd among the most popular web browsers. Also the Chrome OS and Nexus Phone are the latest of their popular products. Learn more about Google here.
2) Facebook
Facebook has totally changed the way people keep in touch among themselves. A $300 million worth social networking site which has become the world second most popular website acc. to Alexa Ranking. This popular website currently has more than 350 million active users worldwide. Compete.com study ranked Facebook as the most used social network by worldwide monthly active users, followed by MySpace. Another reason of Facebook’s popularity is due to large no. of applications it supports and the "games". Because of its massive popularity this most popular social website is banned from schools and collegesresulting in the developments of various hacks & proxies to access Facebook.
3) Youtube
Another popular website, or rather a video sharing website which has actually now transformed into a "watch popular videos for free" websites. Almost every type of TV shows, movie trailers, music videos, music albums, retro songs, how to guides, tutorials, education, funny, news, video blogging, junk etc can be found and viewed easily for free on this most popular video sharing website. Youtube was acquired by Google Inc. in Nov 06 for $1.6 billion and surpasses 1 billions daily pageviews.
YouTube is currently testing HTML5 technology, which allows videos to be viewed without requiring Adobe Flash Player or any other plug-in to be installed in your web browser.
4) Twitter
If some one is online now & not on Facebook then he/ she probably is on this crazy microblogging site called twitter. If you didn’t knew what microblogging means then it mean twittering, and btw, twittering means posting Tweets on your Twitter profile and Tweets means a short message about "what you are upto" in 140 characters or less even if its like "eating pancakes" . If you are not on Twitter and think that the idea seems crazy and stupid then don’t because not only Barrack Obama and NASA but also Bill Gatesuses it to post updates about himself. Twitter is popular but what makes it so special is the vast array of celebrity & vip presence on this most popular social website.
With only 156 employees working behind this site Twitter has more than 80 million users this social site is also easy to access from mobiles and hand held devices. Go Twitter !!!

Wikipedia’s 14 million or more articleshave been written and can be edited by anyone. Its a huge database of knowledge and one can find any info. related to any topic. 7) Digg | Stumbleupon
Both Digg and Stumbleupon are very popular user driven social bookmarking websites people user to share links to the web content they like most with others. This is popular because social bookmarking services provide web feeds for the lists of bookmarks but also its a great way for webmasters to drive massive traffic from these sites if their content is new and eye-catchy. IMDB (Internet Movie Database)
IMDB is currently the world’s most popular movie information and review site. IMDB has 57 million visitors, 17 million of which are registered. The site is popular because of the movie ratings which help people to judge which movies are popular and which are not. 9) Rotten Tomatoes
Almost same like IMDB, the site has some of the most popular website about movies with heavy traffic on the Internet, ranking in the top 1,000 websites visited according to Alexa. And just by doing this the simple site serves over twenty billion page views per month, putting it in 37th place overall among web sites worldwide and 11th place overall among web sites in the United States. Surprisingly the main source of web traffic for this site is mainly word of mouth.
13) Hot or Not
Hot or Not is an interesting and silly but yet a very popular website that allows users to rate the attractiveness of photos submitted voluntarily by others. The site also offers an instant match making engine called ‘Meet Me’ and an extended profile feature called ‘Hotlists’. The website is also popular because of its "Best of" and their blog. Torrent is all about PPFSP (peer-to-peer file sharing protocol) which allows users to share large files amongst each other under one common bandwidth sharing platforms better known as Torrent Clients (like Azureus, uTorrent). Downloading using torrents is very easy as one needs to simply search for the torrent link file on any popular torrent search sites like Demonoid or TorrentSpy drag and drop into the client to start downloading. So, nowadays all this is so useful and popular that you will find lot of users on torrent sites altogether.
15) Blogs
Believe it or not… but nowadays its all about blogs. Previously blogs used be an online diary where one could scribble their daily experiences with life etc. But nowadays the concept has changed. Blogging has revolutionized the way content, information on web in shared and distributed. In the Web 2.0 era, bloggers are like online journalists who review and cover different topics of their interests from politics and technology to entertainment and health issues. Blogging became more popular and widespread when people came to know about making money with blogs using Google adsense and other advertising companies.
